Lake Wallenpaupack

Pennsylvania Power and Light built Lake Wallenpaupack in 1926 as a hydroelectric project. The dam is 1,275 feet long and 70 feet high. When PPL built the plant which began operation in 1926, it created the 5,700-acre, 13 mile long Lake Wallenpaupack, which has become a popular, year-round recreation area.

Boating, water-skiing, windsurfing,jet-skiing, sailing and fishing are popular activities. Boat ramps and slip dock rentals are available at the four recreation-camping areas- Caffrey, Ironwood Point, Ledgedale and Wilsonville. The Tafton Dike Observation Area is located near the junction of U.S. Route 6 and Pennsylvania Route 507 and offers a panoramic view of the lake. There are four islands - Epply, Kipp, Burns and Cairns which have grills and tables for boat-in picnicking. Restrooms are available on Epply, Kipp and Cairns during the summer season.Adjacent to the Wilsonville Recreation Area, is the only public swimming beach and is open from July 1 to Labor Day.
